Cobol to Cloud Options
In my previous article Cobol to Cloud Computing, I analyzed why moving the legacy batch programs written in Cobol to Cloud will be a good value proposition for enterprises. I also listed a few supporting PaaS platforms that will facilitate the migration of Cobol programs to Cloud.

I have learned of additional platforms, which is a welcome sign, as the one of the biggest concerns for CIOs migrating to Cloud is ‘Vendor Lock In' and the options available will make them happy.

Veryant isCOBOL Web Direct 2.0
With isCOBOL Web Direct 2.0, your organization can leverage existing COBOL syntax to develop and deploy a universally accessible, zero client rich Internet application (RIA) using standard COBOL screen sections and existing program procedure division and flow.

Leveraging AJAX technology, isCOBOL Web Direct 2.0 enables the deployment of fully-inter­active COBOL programs to the Web without changing basic application structure.

New applications and UI screens to be deployed with isCOBOL Web Direct 2.0 can be designed using the Eclipse-based isCOBOL IDE. Screens can be developed with the Screen Painter functionality available in the isCOBOL IDE and then tested for the Web leveraging an Apache Tomcat server running locally.

  • The converted Cobol Program to Java is callable as local in process call or can be a remote call using typical Java RMI options
  • The IDE provides easier options to deploy to the Amazon EC2 Cloud platform
  • While the options provided are promising, we may need to wait for final product and associated case studies.
